Prayer for Summertime
(By Beth Lindsay Templeton)
Holy God,
I confess I need an attitude adjustment.
When I complain about the heat, help me remember those whose only
air conditioning is the fluttering leaves above
their
heads as they sleep under a bush.
When I gripe about not being able to go away for a vacation this
year, remind me that some of my neighbors never get a
break from
the stresses of life.
When my children claim they are bored yet again, point me to those
who have nothing to look forward to except sheer
survival.
When I watch baby birds learn to fly from their nest just outside
my window, warm my heart to those who struggle to
grow up
without a watchful parent encouraging them.
When I splash in the pool, soften my judgments about those whose
only water is the Reedy River or a shower at the
Place of Hope.
When I watch the fireworks of summer events, make me mindful to
carry forward the oneness I experience with all kinds
of
people as we ooh and aah.
When you surround me with the beauty of summer flowers, open my
eyes to see the wonder of all the colors of skin in
my
community.
Most gracious God, thank you for listening, for
being patient with me, and for summer with all its blessings and insights.
May this time blossom in me so I may honor you. AMEN
Prayer for the Summertime Journey
Loving God,
You have protected your people
throughout the ages. Protect us this summer as we travel new roads, make new
friends, and leave some old friends for a while.
Whatever changes await us, give
us strength for the journey. Help us grow to be wise, loving and caring people.
Bless our families, our friends,
co-workers and teachers. Renew us with freshness and joy this summer so that we
may continue with all you have planned for us. Bless us and nourish us, now,
and forever. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
